[TALK] FATIMA MAZMOUZ /// The Mosaic Rooms – London

Artists Talk

10/07/19 7:00 pm

Artist Fatima Mazmouz speaks to curator Yasmina Naji and art critic Julie Crenn about her work and practice.

Fatima Mazmouz creates work which critiques social constructions of womanhood and identity and explores colonial inheritence. The body and its communication are central in her work, which often includes an element of performance by the artist herself. In RAW QUEENS, Mazmouz explores through video, sculptures and photographic works the tradition of Aita, a traditional art form still active in popular culture in Morocco today. The performers, known as Chikates are bold female performers who influenced Moroccan literature, poetry, history and activism.

Fatima Mazmouz lives and works in Casablanca, Morocco. Through her multimedia practice, photography, performance and installation she often questions individual and cultural identities.

Yasmina Naji is the founder of Kulte Center for Contemporary Art and Editions in Rabat, Morocco.

Julie Crenn holds a doctorate in art history, she is art critic and an independent curator. Since 2018, she is the artistic director of Transpalette – contemporary art center of Bourges. She regularly contributes to various art magazines, including Artpress, Africultures, Laura, and Branded.

This event is part of Shubbak, London’s biennial festival of Arab contemporary culture.
